About Valve Amplifiers

Unlike the solid state Amps, these devices are powered by vacuum tubes and not by solid-state electronics.

Advantages

There are a number of benefits that comes with the devices. One of the advantages is that the devices have very linear triodes that make it possible to use the amp in very low distortion circuits with very little feedback.

The devices are also electrically very robust. For example, they have the ability of tolerating overloads for minutes. According to experts, the overloads that the devices are able to tolerate can destroy bipolar transistor systems within a matter of seconds.

While they can withstand overloads, they usually operate at voltages that are below their capability. This ensures that they save power and at the same time last for a long time.

They can be constructed in different ways. For example, they can be constructed in such a way that they are able to dissipate large amounts of heat within a short period of time. They can also be constructed in such a way that they produce no heat at all during their working. As a buyer you only need to find the product that is constructed to your liking.

Disadvantages

Just like everything else under the sun, valve amplifiers have their fair share of disadvantages:

One of the disadvantages is that they require a cathode heater. Due to the requirement of the heater, it means that the device losses heat and energy.

In addition to losing heat, they also require high voltages for the anodes. This further brings about increased power use.

The devices are significantly larger than other amplifiers like guitar amplifiers and as a result they require more space.

In some cases, the devices are sensitive to sound and vibrations and in extreme cases they act like microphones.

They are available in one polarity which makes it difficult to use many circuit configurations.
